peep deez

next time your in the mood for a quality flick and pearl harbor just ain't doin it for ya, peep these quality flicks that are kinda old, kinda forgotten, but damn fucking good.

the house of yes - based on a stage play, anyone who appreciates good dialogue will appreciate this movie. plot twists, verbal ninjitsu, and dark, comedic horrors ensue as a family get together goes awfully bad.
school of rock - jack black's instant classic! written for jack black by his co-star, school of rock is a feel-good family comedy that works. sure it's formulaic, sure it's predictable, but hot damn can those kids steal scenes. kudos to black for providing where the film needed provision, and stepping aside when the kids were to shine.
dirty work - norm macdonald and artie lange. if you don't like their standup, you won't like this movie. if you do like their tasteless, crude, sophmoric and often times offensive sense of humor, you'll find dirty work to be a classic.
charlie brown series - ALL CHARLIE BROWN SPECIALS! BON VOYAGE, CHARLE BROWN!, IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN!, AND A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS are some of the best cartoons next to looney tunes. there's something about the peanuts gang that illicits humor, poignancy, and bittersweet innocence that separates it from all other animation.
pulp fiction - what, you need an explanation for this?
heathers - this movie was often times overlooked and way underrated. it was also about fifteen years ahead of its time. even the directors didn't know what to do what this script. watch, but listen closer. daniel waters' sharp-edge dialogue and cutting edge humor made this flick a teen comedy that teenagers probably shouldn't watch.
natural born killers - brilliant anarchy is all i can say about oliver stone's perception of a quentin tarantino script. chaos, insanity, pop culture, and more insanity as stone delivers a crazy portrayal of serial killers, celebrity status, and an even crazier world.
the outsiders - s.e. hinton's classic book was made by francis ford coppola into an equally classic film. this sad tale of ghetto hoods versus rich socialite children is carried by strong performances from ralph macchio(yes, the karate kid), c. thomas howell, patrick swayze(yes, dirty dancing), and matt dillon as rumblefish bad boy dallas winston.
there's something about mary - classic com-i-daaayyy! the farrelly brothers hit it BIG with there's something about mary. it's fucking hilarious. what more can i say.
reservoir dogs - do i need to say?
predator - hey, don't mock me. predator was a cool, fucking action movie. almost as good as the next movie, but this flick is a guy's flick. don't ask your chick to see this. watch this alone when you're feeling like blowing something up.
true lies - a classic action comedy. call me a dumbass, but i think true lies is one of the greatest movies of all time. it's comedy is as top notch as its action. never will you see arnold schwarzeneggar crack as many funny one-liners as he does bad-guy skulls. tom arnold is in it too, but it's still really good.
all jackie chan movies - what more can i say? jackie chan was once described as buster keaton meets bruce lee, but neither of them had the balls of this guy. a broken neck, burn scars, broken fingers, shattered ribs-- watch any of his movies and you'll see why.
ed and his dead mother - if you can find this movie anywhere, let me know. i've seen it twice on late night t.v., but never have i been able to find it in any video store or chain retailer. probably available on amazon, but i'm in no rush, nor willing to pay full price. steve buscemi stars as a mama's boy who's overprotective mother dies... but then refuses to die. her walking zombie continues to infiltrate his life, despite becoming overcome with maggots, rotting away, and going through the usual post-rigor mortis effects of death. yeah, it's a dark comedy... can you tell?
cold blooded (jason priestley) - another dark comedy, and something jason priestly was actually good in. he stars as a college kid(i think, it's been awhile), who makes ends meet by becoming a hit man. what makes the movie is priestly's performance of a numb, emotionless guy, willing to kill as a job. probably not easy to find, i think this was an independent canadian film.
moto-rama - another indie hard-to-find. moto-rama was another flick i caught on t.v. late one night that glued my eyes to the set. it's a story about an abused kid who runs away from home, travels the country, and meets a bunch of strange... strangers. hard to describe, but if you're into the offbeat, definitely worth watching.
moonstruck - call me gay, but the only thing i remember about moonstruck was promising myself to buy it afterwards. i distinctly remember telling myself to buy it, no matter how much i start to change my mind later on. i haven't bought it yet, but i probably will. i tend to listen to myself. i respect my opinions.
faithful - another great dialogue driven film. i don't know if this was based on a play or not, but it does play out like one. it's about a hitman played by chazz palminteri, sent to kill someone's wife, played by cher. she's great in this, but what follows is deceit, betrayal, intrigue, and such confusing plot twists that i don't remember what happens. that's a lie, yes i do. it's a good movie. it's also funny as hell.
swingers - classic. it's money.
butch cassidy and the sundance kid - dude, if you don't realize this is a classic, get off your moronic ass and rent it NOW. do better than that, BUY IT. it's an epitomal film. yes, it's THAT good.
3 strikes - this is one of those movies that got two thumbs down, close to zero stars, and i found it funny as hell. just goes to show you that art is in the eye of the beholder, and my eye beheld this one. it's dumb, it's lame, it's stupid, and it's funny.
animal house - on the contrary to 3 strikes, animal house is smart, funny, stupid, and dumb. stupid and dumb because it's about stupid and dumb college guys, but smart and funny because... well, it's smart, and funny.
sin city - this movie is whack, i don't know why it's in here.
dumb and dumber - i used to think this film was a classic comedy, but after another recent viewing i'm beginning to think i've moved past this, or it doesn't hold up now. still, you'll probably laugh a lot if you watch it stoned.
goodfellas -the epitomal gangster flick. better than the godfather. that's right, i said it.
i'm gonna git you sucka! - ha ha, the greatest black slapstick film in the world. the wayans brothers' first strike into hollywood, and boy was it a good one. this one does hold up, i've seen it a few times lately.
dangerously close - this was a cheap B-movie that i really liked because it had a couple of really cool characters. one was a punk-goth-mod, before punk-goth-mod's had labels, and the other was a smart, likeable everyman. it's about a bunch of college kids who haze other students they don't like, by kidnapping them late at night and hunting them with guns. the targets don't know they're paintball guns, so it turns out to be all about scaring them. until the guns become real. then it becomes... dangerously close. (sorry, i couldn't resist).
pi - great fucking indie film. be careful watching this though, because if you don't get it-- it means you're dumb.
better off dead - great 80's comedy starring the great 80's comedic actor john cusack. in the 80's, a teen comedy wasn't a teen comedy unless it had one of two things: john hughes as a writer, or john cusack as a character.
hard-boiled - chin tah chow wah! chinese hardcore was never so chinese, nor hardcore. you've never seen chinks blasting like this since... well, you never have. and don't be offended that i said chinks, it tends to slip out... i'm asian.
superman - THE EPITOMAL COMIC-BOOK SUPER HERO MOVIE. fuck spider-man, the hulk, and that gay ass version of daredevil. if you wanna know how to make a comic book character into a film legend, go back to this original. it won a bunch of academy awards, not that awards really mean anything, but it sure as hell deserved them.
batman - not the epitomal comic-book super hero movie, kevin smith even badmouthed this version and its sequel. i like it because tim burton stayed true to the emotion of the batman comic books. batman wasn't the blue and grey overweight homosexual adam west played, he wasn't even the slimmer blue and grey eurofag depicted in the superfriends cartoons. batman was always a dark, brooding, disturbed figure of altruism, as depicted in this tim burton classic.
batman 2 - the movie for movies' sake wasn't all that great, but just like the original batman 2 was about darkness, the art, and depicting batman, catwoman, and the penguin as the brooding characters they were. best to watch with the lights off, late at night, on a big screen t.v.
lost boys - this movie sucked, but it was original for its time. it also had a killer soundtrack. it was a bit ahead of its time, but now-- outdated.
the incredibles - a great animated film. great story, great characters, great dialogue, and great character arcs. especially the kid incredibles.
bambi - yes i loved this movie and no i'm not gay.
spaceballs - this movie is a bit outdated but will still give you a handful of laughs. mel brooks was the king of slapstick, but with the fast pace of today's world, spaceballs (today) may seem a little slow.
ferris bueller's day off - classic! a great teen comedy despite not being written by john hughes or starring john cusack. forget the "teen," it's just a great comedy.
fast times at ridgemont high - the other classic teen comedy of its time, despite not being written by john hughes or starring john cusack. it was written by cameron crowe and directed by amy heckerling, which is just as good. great cast, great comedy, great moments in film (read: i.e.,. phoebe cates' titties).
